Today, I thought I would switch things up and review the Sheringham Distillery Kazuki Gin. In addition to coffee, I unfortunately do enjoy imbibing in a drink or two on the weekends so this will be the first post dedicated to that. I first heard of the Sheringham Distillery when I was living in Vancouver. It was nice to find an award-winning distillery from Vancouver Island. Unfortunately, the products are a bit hard to find outside of BC/Alberta. Hopefully you are lucky enough to have a local liquor store that stocks their products. For example, it is hard to source this in Ontario.
Anyways, the distillery is well-known for their gins (notably their Seaside Gin which has won a number of awards). I actually purchased both the Sheringham Kazuki Gin and the Sheringham Seaside Gin (which I’ll review at another time). On the Sheringham Distillery Kazuki Gin, it is made with Japanese-influenced botanicals such as imported cherry blossoms and yuzu peel and local green tea leaves and flowers. The gin definitely has more citrus and less juniper than some of the more mainstream products you might have sampled. Maybe my palette sucks, but didn’t get much of the green tea out of this. That being said, it was a well balanced gin.
For me, I’ve been enjoying this in a more basic form to let the gin come though: Gin and Sodas or Gin and Tonics. For a delicate small-batch gin like this I wouldn’t overdo it with other ingredients – save the French 75 for Tanqueray or Beefeater.
A bottle of the Sheringham Distillery Kazuki Gin will run you around $50 CAD for a 750mL bottle. It is not the cheapest, but worth it for an occasional splurge. Has won a few awards including the “CASC Best Canadian Artisan Spirit 2020”.
Rating: 4/5 (worth a spot on the bar shelf)
